DAY 01

Colombo-Habarana

Ayubowan! Upon arrival at Colombo International Airport you will be greeted by our representative. You will meet your driver for the coming days and start your discovery tour through Sri Lanka. Upon arrival in Sigiriya, check into your accommodation for the next two nights. In the afternoon, the first highlight will be the visit of the imposing Sigiriya Rock. On the summit of the seemingly impregnable monolith, King Kassapa once erected his palace with elegant pavilions, extensive gardens and ponds. Since in former times a stone lion at the entrance of the fortress thronte, the monolith bears the surname “lion rock”. The ascent to the almost 200 m high rock is rewarded with a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. Return to your hotel to end your first evening in Sri Lanka at dinner. DAY 02

Habarana-Polonnaruwa-Habarana

After breakfast, your day trip begins to Polonnaruwa. In the morning, you will explore the vast expanse of the former capital of Sri Lanka by bike. Polonnaruwa was the second capital of the empire from the 11th to 13th centuries after Anuradhapura. There are magnificent statues, impressive Dagabas, palaces and not least “Gal Vihara” – 4 imposing Buddha statues carved in the rock. To the south of the city you will find the statue of King Parakramabahu I. The gigantic dam in the south of the city was built under his rule. Since 1982, Polonnaruwa has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After visiting the ancient city you have the opportunity to strengthen yourself in Polonnaruwa with a typical Sri Lankan curry (optional). Afterwards, go on a safari in Minneriya to observe the about 200 wild elephants. In addition to the gentle giants, the area around the Minneriya reservoir is also home to Axis. After returning to your hotel, the rest of the day is at leisure.

DAY 03

Habarana- Kandy

Today you leave the cultural triangle and after breakfast break towards Kandy. On the way visit the cave temple in Dambulla. First you will see the golden statue of Buddha at the foot of the temple, about 30 m high. After about 600 steps, you will reach the entrance of the more than 2000 year old temple. From the almost 200 m high rock you have a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside. They explore the five caves with a total of 153 Buddha statues and impressive rock paintings. The route continues in the direction of Kandy. On the way, you will stop in one of the spice gardens and learn more about the cultivation of cinnamon, vanilla, pepper and other aromatic plants. After an optional lunch in the garden, you will be ready to meet your needs. Arrive in your hotel in Kandy, you have the opportunity to relax at the hotel pool or explore the city on a walk.

DAY 04

Kandy

Your present day program is versatile and colorful. After breakfast, explore the bustling market halls in Kandy. Afterwards, the Peradeniya Botanical Garden offers a welcome change to the hustle and bustle of the city. The Botanical Garden of Peradeniya is the second largest of Asia with 62 hectares and is considered one of the most beautiful. The garden is famous for its orchid house, where over 300 species are exhibited. In the late afternoon, the famous dental temple awaits you to be visited by you. Here, according to the tradition of the Buddhist priests, the Buddha’s left canine is in a shrine. In complete contrast to this spiritual experience and at the same time the crowning conclusion of the day is a visit of a folklore show of the Kandy dancers, with their colorful costumes, an absolute eye-candy.

DAY 05

Kandy-Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast, take the train from Kandy to Nanu Oya. The tracks run through the spectacular mountain landscape with tea plantations, gorges and waterfalls. You will be on the second class train, so you have the opportunity to get in touch with the locals and taste the delicacies offered by the traders. On arrival in Nanu Oya you will be driven by your driver’s guide to Nuwara Eliya. In Nuwara Eliya, because of its English-style houses called “Little England”, you will visit the city center, then drive to Ella and end the day in peace.

DAY 06

Nuwara Eliya-Bandarawela

On your journey today, change the means of transport and change from the car to the means of transport. After breakfast, your driver takes you from the hotel to Nanu Oya, about 10 km away. During the approximately 3-hour train ride you will pass the beautiful landscape. Perhaps there is also a conversation with the Sri Lankan fellow travelers. At the station of Ella, your driver will be waiting for you to come to your destination – to Bandarawela. On the way you should not miss the fantastic view at the “Ella Gap”.

DAY 07

Bandarawela-Udawalawe

Today you will leave the highlands of Sri Lanka again and reach Udawalawe in the early afternoon. After a short refreshment, your jeep awaits you at the hotel and takes you directly to the national park. The over 300 km² park is mainly known for its large elephant population, but also hosts numerous other animal species such as water buffaloes, wild boars, deer and jackals. The area around the Udawalawe reservoir was declared a national park in 1972 to protect the animals living there. The vegetation mostly consists of open grasslands and forests.

DAY 08 – 09

Udawalawe – Ahangama

Airport
